4 Easy In-Season Tips for Automatic Pool Covers

Automatic pool covers are a great investment, and Tredway is proud to be one of the top 5 installers in the United States. They help with safety, cleanliness, and heat retention. To protect your cover and keep it operating properly throughout the season, it’s important to follow a few key guidelines.

Maintain Proper Water Level

Always keep your pool water at the normal operating level, which is typically halfway up the skimmer box.

  • If the water level is too low and the cover is closed, it can cause significant damage to the cover and track system.
  • Never close the automatic cover if the water level is low or if the pool is empty.
  • When filling your pool, run the hose along the tracks to help get grit, dirt, and sand out of them for a smoother glide.

Proper water levels provide the necessary support for the cover and prevents unnecessary strain.

Use a Cover Pump

We strongly recommend using a cover pump whenever the automatic cover is closed.

  • A cover pump removes standing water from the top of the cover.
  • This helps prevent excess weight that can stretch or damage the cover.
  • Don’t use a pocket/snake hose; a standard garden hose is best, or stop in our Fort Wayne or Warsaw store to grab a cover blast! (A spout that shoots water up to 25 feet!)

Winter Tip:
A cover pump is especially important during the winter months, as it removes water from the cover as ice melts, reducing stress on the material.

Practice a Soft Open and Close

When opening or closing your automatic cover, especially as it approaches the ends of the pool:

  • Tap the control button instead of holding it continuously.
  • This allows the cover to slow down and creates a “soft close” or “soft open,” helping prevent damage to the cover, ropes, and mechanism.
