5 Ways to Save on Pool Energy Costs

5 Ways to Save on Pool Energy Costs

Getting your own swimming pool is all about getting to have fun in the sun, right? When you’re in your pool, you shouldn’t have a care in the world. The last thing you want is to be concerned about your energy costs when you should be enjoying your carefree time.

So, to help you reduce your pool’s energy costs and get to focus on having fun in it we’ve come up with five smart, helpful, and practical tips that will mean you can enjoy your pool and save on your pool’s energy costs at the same time.

Where Do Your Pool’s Costs Come From?

The biggest energy costs with all pools are generally split across four areas: pumping, heating, lighting, and filtration. So we’ve got a tip to address each of them. This will help you keep your costs low and all the poolside fun high.

Pump It Up

  • Get an energy efficient pump

Did you know that most pool pumps are second only to air conditioning units in terms of energy consumption? That’s right, you can save on your pool energy costs by upgrading to a more efficient pump. Over time your energy costs will be reduced.

  • Set a timer

Have your pool pump on a timer. It reduces the amount of time the pump is working during the day. Also, reducing its speed is another great way to reduce energy consumption. It’s the equivalent of turning off the lights when you leave a room — every little bit helps!

Keep It Covered

  • Invest in a good pool cover. Most pools are kept at a temperature of 78 degrees so the energy used to heat the pool will be lowered if you keep it covered over when you’re not using it. That way, the heat can’t escape as quickly. Also it’s important to note that, if you like to swim in warm water (say, over 82 degrees), for every degree you add, you’re looking at paying between 10%-30% more on your energy costs.

As a bonus, keeping your pool covered means you also save on chemicals to treat it too because they won’t evaporate away.

Light Up

  • Switch to LED lights. They last longer and are more energy efficient. It’s a win-win. LEDs use less that 50 watts for up to 50,000 hours of illumination when you compare it to incandescent bulbs that use over 300 watts for just 4,000 hours. It’s pretty easy math to do, right?

Efficient is Effective

  • It’s not glamorous but one of the main ways to help reduce energy costs and keep your pool being a source of outdoor fun for all the family is to consistently maintain it. Drain the systems, do some backwashing every few weeks and clean the filters regularly. It’ll all help keep things working as efficiently as possible. And, that, in turn, will help keep your energy costs down.

When it comes to saving money on your pool’s energy costs it is a balancing act between up-to-date equipment and basic maintenance. Incorporating these tips will help to reduce energy costs over time. The team at Tredway Pools is always on hand to help advise you, so get in touch with us today.
